“Wild Surge”
This is an amplified pencil drawing. Very D&D book style. It’s a pretty awesome look.
Over the years the stuff I’ve seen in the books has become a solid marking-post pointing towards the golden marches of Where-I-Want-To-Be-Land. Especially these days, where Wizards of the Coast apparently SWEATS in the form of COLD HARD CASH and can afford to pay for page after page of top-of-the-line illustration.
The illustrations in there just get fancier and fancier, until it almost starts sounding like they’re just pulling content out of their ass just so their illustrators will have more work. Thorgar the Unshaven has never looked so good introducing his axe to exciting new types of fleshy orc face.
However, some birdies have told me they pay spit. Which is a total shame, not just cause the illustrators are being paid in spit, which is just wet and gross. But it also makes what is essentially a bastion…perhaps THE bastion (one of ‘em that gets the capital THE, anyways) of hardcore nerdism look like a bunch of tightfisted shills.
With all this, its no wonder I keep hearing its hard to make it as an illustrator. With all this, its no surprise that it’s children’s book illustration that has become Jumanji for illustrators, shining its golden rays of hope, job security and royalty checks through the fetid jungles of every-goddamn-thing else.
That’s not gonna stop me from drawing stuff like this though.
After all…it is a pretty awesome look.
